Yumichika Ayasegawa

Yumichika, at first glance, seems an incredibly self-involved, easily bored, narcissistic young man. This is accurate, to a point, but there is more to him than that. Yumichika tends to view things as either 'pretty' or 'ugly,' and judges them accordingly. While he finds anything he deems 'ugly' appalling, he will nonetheless stand up for anyone being picked on, because he views ugly behavior as the gravest of sins.

Yumichika is kind and loyal to his friends, and often offers his services in making them more beautiful. With his friends, this is never meant as offensive, though it may sometimes come across that way. He greatly values his friends, and would sacrifice much for them. He has kept his family's spells secret, sure that if any of his friends found out about them, they would be afraid of him and abandon him. While these spells would grant him much power, he would rather have his friendships, and would only use these spells in defense of himself or them.

Yumichika is extremely intelligent, and will taunt his enemies about their ugliness, feign boredom, and otherwise ignore them in order to fluster them into leaving him alone without having to resort to actual fighting. He rarely reacts to insults directed at himself, unless someone calls him ugly.

The Ayasegawas are a Japanese wizarding family, who tend to specialize in the darker aspects of Herbology. They grew and bred various magical plants to use in battle to disorient, immobilize, and otherwise negatively effect their enemies. One of them bred a plant he called the Devouring Vine, which fed off magical energy. This plant was effective in battle, for if a wizard was exposed to a fully matured Devouring Vine plant, it would decrease his magical power. If exposed for a long enough time, the wizard would be a Squib. Some years later, one of the Ayasegawas began experimenting with creating spells that would conjure the battle plants from the wand, so they would not have to carry the plants with them. She created several spells, one of which was the Consuming Bloom, (effloresco voro) which conjured the Devouring Vine to wrap around the enemy, and as magical energy was drained, the vines budded and bloomed. Upon full bloom, the enemy was a Squib. These plant spells were passed down, kept secret and rarely used. The Ayasegawa family was firmly against using spells such as these for anything other than self-defense, or defense of others, and the Consuming Bloom spell was never to be used except in the most extreme of circumstances. Several generations down the line, the family split. One side became power-hungry, and believed that if they had the power to do these things, they should be allowed to do them. The other side maintained that they were only to be used to defend. So the Ayasegawa family went to war with itself, and the power-hungry Ayasegawas fled to all ends of the earth to escape with their knowledge. Eventually the branch on the side of defense found and destroyed all the family members who thought to use the spells for personal gain, but not before some word of the terrifying Consuming Bloom had gotten out. Now the Ayasegawa families have each settled in different places, and keep the secrets of their family close. Yumichika's family settled in England, where he was born an only child. As the heir, he was taught the plant spells, and told to keep them secret, unless their use was absolutely necessary. Other than learning the plant magic, Yumichika's childhood was that of a typical wizarding family's heir. His family is a wealthy one, so he is perhaps more spoiled than the average wizard child, however, the traits of loyalty, strength, and devotion to friends and family valued by the Ayasegawas are strong in Yumichika, and no one who really knows him was surprised when he was sorted into Hufflepuff upon entering Hogwarts. Yumichika's first six years at Hogwarts were rather uneventful, he made fast friends with some of his year mates, and infuriated others with his strange attitudes and beliefs about beauty and ugliness.
